More sports

Here are the names of other types of sports in French that most of us in France at least try once at school in PE (for many of them, we have a shorter colloquial version):

  • L’escalade - climbing
  • La lutte - wrestling

Pay special attention to the pronunciation of the English words we use for sports activities in French. For all sports in -ball we pronounce it with an ‘o’ sound as if it were written ‘-boll’ but for ‘le handball’ we actually pronounce the ‘a’!

Some other sports we tend to do outside of school and can be considered traditional French sports, depending on where you live in France:

  • Le ski - skiing
  • La pétanque - boules

One interesting name of sport in French is the word we use for ‘jogging’: we created a new ‘English’ word for it:

  • Le footing - jogging

FAQ

  • Is it ‘le sport’ or ‘la sport’?
    • The word ‘sport’ in French is masculine, so if you want to say ‘the sport’, you have to use the masculine article: ‘le sport’. A lot of expressions in French when it comes to sports use the partitive article (some), so if you want to say ‘I do sports every day’, you have to say ‘Je fais du sport tous les jours’. (some sport in French)
  • Are the names of sports in French masculine or feminine?
    • Unfortunately, it just depends on the specific sport. For example, ‘la natation’ (swimming) is feminine but ‘le tennis’ is masculine. The easiest way is to learn the names of the sports with the article in French.
One tip though - the names of sports ending in -ball are all masculine in French, like ‘le football’.
  • What is the French word for cycling?
    • The French word for ‘cycling’ as a sport is ‘le cyclisme’, and you can use it in sentences like ‘il fait du cyclisme’ (he cycles as a sport). If you want something more casual about just riding a bike without considering it like an extreme sport, you can just use ‘if fait du vélo’ (he rides a bike).

"Amazing language learning tool. Excellent app for increasing vocabulary in your foreign language of choice. Useful for beginner, intermediate, and advanced learners. The repetition of the words makes them much easier to remember, and without the hassle of making your own flash cards. I have used Drops for two years now and have seen great results."

"Less than a week in but using this alone with the popular one babbel working on German. When using just one app I got bored, babbel is not as fun. So using both at once actually let's my adhd do its thing but I still focused since I can switch easily between both apps and work in different areas. Also I like the quick little sessions makes me feel like I actually did something."

Diana Morris

"So engaging. I speak Spanish well, but often forget words in conversation that I know I should know. This game is fun and quickly brings back vocabulary I may have put in the back of my brain after not using it for awhile. Case in point: I spent 11 years in construction, then went back to teaching in English and/or Spanish depending on the teacher/student"
